I think your talking about the hand held pushbutton switches that the mechanics use to bump or crank the engine over while they are working under the hood. These are only made for engines with solenoids where it is activated by low voltage. This is a simply a switch that is connected across the low voltage of the solenoid just as you ignition switch is.
In the case of a truck with no solenoid, you could mount a second foot switch in a box to be placed on the garage floor/ground to engage the starter but you would have to run some pretty hefty (read battery) cables leading to it. To handle the current, that’s the purpose of the solenoid.
