I bought a vacuum gauge yesterday and will be trying it tomorrow. To answer 1 question, there is a vacuum advance on the bottom of the dist. But there is no hose connecting it to the manifold. I have all manifold and carb vacuum ports plugged. I will be going over valve settings, timing, and using my new gauge. Thanks again for the responses and I will post my findings soon.
