Big vacuum leak - vacuum line disconnected, intake manifold not seated - gasket - crack, Carb gasket - spacer?
The engine is getting too much air. When you can add enough gas to make the mixture rich enough it runs.
Unless there is a big crack in the head, your problem is between the face of the head and the bottom of the throttle plate.
