Depends on the fuel pump. Most electric pumps do not like to suck fuel, once primed they work OK, but if the keep running dry every time you shut it off, they will not last. Mechanical pumps do not care. If you install a check valve right at the tank outlet, you can get away with it. The valve should hold fuel in the line and pump.
