I have a thought...it might be wrong, but I'll mention it anyway.
With your old externally regulated system, #4 on the regulator should have been the feed from the key and charge indicator light, if you had one.
If you hooked your new #1 wire to this wire, you wouldn't have to dig under the dash, plus you would have the idiot light function as before.
This light would offer the resistance necessary to stop any run-on.
Your old alternator should have had a large power lead that could just be connected to the new alternator.
Your sensing wire...#2 could wrap around as hot rod indicated and attach to the power lug.
Sure hope this is right!!
