Turn off your engine. Pull the bat wire from the alt. Put your volt meter in series with the negitive to the alternator terminal and positive to the wire end. Read with the voltmeter set to The 50 volt scale and if no reading set to the 10 volt scale to be sure. any drain through the alternator will be a reading.
(if you have pos ground reverse the meter conections). You can buy a multi-meter for less than $20.
