If the tab is labeled fuel gauge, why wouldn't it be the power to the gauge rather than to the sending unit? Does the schematic show anything other than a single wire from the sending unit? Are you sure the dome light and the fuel gauge don't share a fuse in the fuse block? Usually dome lights are always hot with a controlled ground and are always fused. Sorry to ask so many questions, but I don't have the schematic.
