I bought new taillights last year from Chevy Duty and they had 2 #61 lamps instead of 1 #1157. Adequate, but not real bright. I got a set of sockets from LMC made to convert the front parking lights to turn signals, modified them slightly and used them in my taillights. They use 1157's. Now my taillights and brake lights are nice and bright plus my left brake light seems to work all the time. Think maybe there was a bad socket in the old set-up.
