I am doing exactly what you discribed to my '56 3100. I got a Suburban tank which has all the right dents to nest it right up to the frame cross members. I modified the original gas tank starps to work with the frame tank. The filler neck to the tank is right on top of the frame on the right side of the truck.
I then got a universal gas filler door from Tanks Inc and installed it in the rear fender behind the right rear tire. The filler neck is at a 45 degree angle and is 2" pipe size, so I had a 2" x 1-1/2" reducer made and installed that right at the Tanks Filler neck (only used about 4" of 2" rubber hose). I got (2) 1-1/2" 90* Gas Filler rubber hoses from NAPA and used a straight piece of 1-1/4" EMT pipe (1-1/2" OD pipe) to go between the two 90's. The pipe is U bolted to the bottom of the bed cross members to the outside of the leaf springs.
I'm not on the road yet, but I like the way it looks.
Oh, I forgot to mention I got a roll over vent and will be mounting it on an ell bracket and hanging it from one of the top fender bolts under the fender.
