the sending unit and gauge for sure have to match,,dont know much about resistor change, I had a problem doing mine in my 52 so I cheated and bought after market gauge and sending unit to match,, they for sure do have to match,, sorry I wasn't much help.. I know that I am glad that I do have one that works even though it is under my dash,,Fred
