You could take the key out after you turned the truck on
I know I used that feature a lot on my '63 C10 when I lived in Denver. I would go out and start the truck, take the key out, then lock the doors and go back inside while it warmed up.
I know, not the best policy these days, but it was the early 80's and I was a punk kid. Too stupid to know better.
