Hi Alan.
As to your question about the bed. yes, it is just plywood with no cross braces (actually it has 1 cross brace that really isn't doing anything).
The topside is just a more weathered version of the bottom side.
This is one of the top priority items to fix after the major mechanical stuff is addressed.
