Either the detent is flawed/worn or the shifter down-rod may be out of adjustment. With the keeper on the shifter down-rod loosened, put the transmission pivot and the shift indicator in P. If it holds in P, tighten the shifter down-rod keeper. If not, be sure the pivot assembly is not turning, independent of the pivot shaft, going into the transmission housing.
