Thanks for the thorough analysis. I went over evrything tonite and noticed one of the linkage pivot points was a little rusty from sitting unused while I tore down the truck and painted it these last 8 months. It's possible it got a little wet in the process.
I lubed it all up and tried it out with out the key and it seems fine, but I may put a stronger spring on the linkage just in case. I also noticed that the spring passes very close to the frame to engine gound connection and could possibly hang up at that point.
