Its possible, but I'd go for the maxi fuse instead if it were me.

A fusable link protects the wiring but needs to be big enough to carry the normal load. If the circuit needs 12 guage wire 18 guage isn't going to be big enough. You'll be replacing that link all the time if it really requires 12 guage normally.

Fuses are a lot easier to get right.
