a smaller diameter pulley is preferable on an alternator [faster spin], what might be a problem is width, if it's a much narrower groove an original belt will likely be too wide, and while you may be able to get a narrower belt to work, you don't want the narrow belt to be bottoming out in the other pulleys .... play it by ear
