Your starter will be fine, it will just start the engine faster than it would with 6v. You definately want a 12v coil and a ballast resistor to protect the points.

here . I went with a single wire alternator and replaced the entire wiring harness; quicker starts, brighter headlights, electric wipers all make the truck more user-friendly.
