the route you suggest is factory, just make sure to stand the line off slightly so there's no direct contact anywhere - which is easier to maintain with metal than rubber .... the carb should have a fine screen insert in the inlet fitting, but I've always used the cheap see-thru plastic filters just before the carb with no problems
