if it is a bypass system, it only takes a tiny percentage of oil from the gallery and runs it through the filter and dumps it straight into the pan. The oil that goes to the engine itself isn't actually ran through a filter before it gets to the bearings. you could use a spin on filter as a bypass, but the micron rating isn't as low as one for the bypass unit. And you would need to put some form of restriction in the run at some point or all your oil pressure will go away. (remember it just dumps back into the crankcase.) If I am not mistaken there is a tech tip just for this sort of thing on this forum. There are many opinions about how this compares to a full flow filter, all I know is they quit using this system many years ago and cars now days run 3 times as long as these used to. However lubrication technology, machine work, fuel mangagement (cuts down on the amount of excess carbon in the oil) has improved so dramatically it is hard to tell what the actual cause of longevity may be. If you want to use the bypass unit you can put it anywhere you have room that suits your fancy. I have seen a lot of them on the firewall. A full flow unit will require a bit more work, and since I am not so familiar with a 57 block, that will have to wait for Dave. But whatever the case you will have to get a filter block from napa or some such, fab up some sort of bracket and mount the filter where you can, and run lines to and from it. As far as I know no one makes a bolt on kit. The best tool you can get is the manual which should give you a very thorough and complete description of the entire oiling system. I do know the 54 oil pump has a 45 psi relief on it. I would say 20 psi hot at idle and 30 or so running, (thats what I get anyway)
