The carrier bearings are roller type. They fit inside the bearing caps and are preloaded. These bearings were roller type as far back as 1940. Perhaps earlier.

The roller part is pressed onto the two end of the carrier and the races are placed on them when it is installed into the housing then are preloaded with the adjusting screws.
