I was referring to cars built in the teens and early 20's that only had doors on the passenger side. I'm not sure when the various companies started putting doors on both sides. I'm also not sure when external door locks were put on both sides.
A wild guess on why cars may have had locks on both sides before trucks could be that taller truck cabs made it easier to slide across the seat.
