Your mechanic probably meant "babbitt" rods. If your engine is a true 54, then you'll have conventional insert bearings. I can't really give you any real advise since it seems you don't have anywhere to work on your truck. I'm leaning toward a rebuilt 235 for your application. It's the quickest, and probably easiest.
