I have used an 12 volt generator on my 50 for 38,000 miles now. Electric wipers, halogen lights, 40 watt stereo and never had a dead battery. I don't do much city driving though and if I spent most of my time sitting in traffic I might consider an alternator. I like the generator for the same reason I run dual rochesters instead of a 4 barrel, I like the nostalgic look.
