The major advantage is that the alternator will charge at idle. Personally, I wouldn't make the change unless the generator or regulator were bad, or I had the engine our, or I had money burning a hole in my pocket. With the right alternator, you can use your existing brackets. Best thing to do is to take your generator to your local parts store. They should be able to find one that will only require a bushing on the aft end of the lower bolt.
