Another thought from the Peanut Gallary would be to use a dash light dimmer switch. Don't know of a US example, but late 1980 240 series Volvo's use a variable dimmer switch that gives a voltage range of less than 4 to over 10. A very small switch that would be easy to mount in or under dash.
