I had full intentions of getting a small trailer for my '53 half ton. However, after having it on the road for the past year, there is no way it will ever tow a trailer. I still have the single master cylinder as well as 4 drum brakes and armstrong steering.
I regularly pull a 7000 lb trailer with my 3/4 ton GMC and know what happens on the roads.
To answer the question, good trailer brakes are a must, you should be able to haul a 1000 lb trailer.
