This is a job i've just completed myself,although I had no such problems with kinking.
I used the
black windlace and slid most of it in and in a couple of areas at the channel joins I 'worked' the rubber in with a plastic glazing stick.
It seems this problem is relative to the colour,I wonder if the light gray/tan one is a different composition?
