A friend of mine was in the building biz and built a house using pole barn type construction. Heavily insulated, heated floor throughout, house siding and roofing, etc to the extent that no one knew it was a post type construction. Really a nice well built home. He had a huge shop building which he built from left over materials and only had the concrete cost in. It even had a rental apartment built into it. Now that is using your head. I wanted to build a two story shop with a rental unit upstairs but zoning prohibited it.
