You lucked out on the 540, it looks like it has the short(about 6") input shaft. Can bolt to just about anything, just drill and tap the bellhousing for this bolt pattern. Bottom holes may be taped already for mounting bolts to be inserted from inside bellhousing. A good, close ratio trans., not stong enough for a 6BT, fine for a 4BT, 4-53, etc.
Probably won't get more than scrap price for it, save for appropriate project w/ diesel for you or one of your buddies. Easy to adapt to transfer case w/ stock Ford adapter off 435.
Do you mean to say that I could mate this trans. up with my 6cyl Chevy bell housing, drill and tap the mounting bolt pattern and be good to go? And if so I use the Chevy flywheel and clutch? From the transmissions bell housing mating surface to the end of the input shaft it measures 9-1/4". To the end of the spline it measures 7". The diameter of the end of the shaft is 1/2". The diameter of the spline is 1-1/2". The transmission in length, bell housing mating surface to roughly center line of u-joint is 18", how does this compare in length to the SM420?
