If you get a replacement original pump you will be fine, no regulator needed.

If you want to eliminate your current fuel pump as the problem place your temporary fuel tank about a foot or more above the carb, it should run fine if that was the problem.

I am leaning toward a carb cleaning and rebuild, what you describe does not sound like a fuel pump problem.
