yes you should be checking it routinely, and checking adjustment as well, and now that you've found the master reservoir empty it's time to bleed the system, these old systems are vented to the air - unchecked for 4 years, the fluid loss is as likely to have been from evaporation as from a weep that's so minor it isn't evident outside the rubber boot
