I never trust a gauge. Unless the coolant is boiling, IT'S NOT OVERHEATING! If there's no loss of coolant volume from the radiator overflow, it's highly unlikely there's a real problem with heat. Testing the gauge, whether it's a direct-reading type or electric, should be one of the first things that's done if the routine fixes don't seem to be helping.
