I have also had good luck inking up the gasket surface and then pressing a piece of paper or the gasket material so as to make a "print"
My focus is always to make a pattern, which I save for the next time I or someone else needs one. I routinely scan any gaskets I buy for the same reason. Saves a lot of time in the long run.
