Do the wash with the engine warm, and don't spray directly into electrical/electronic parts like the starter, alternator, distributor, etc.
After the cleanup is done, walk away for a couple of hours while the engine heat evaporates any leftover water from critical areas like spark plug wires, distributor cap, etc. Don't try to start a freshly-washed engine.
