People, This is why we have a choke.
I some times forget that we now have several generations of engine operators who didn't grow up with chokes.
The choke is not intended to be on or off but modulated according to the engine's needs while it warms up.
As the choke plate is moved toward closed it increases the vacuum signal in the carb venturi so more fuel is delivered into the airstream.And the right choke opening for a cold engine at part throttle will NOT be correct as the engine warms or the speed or load changes.
Automatic chokes are designed to sense the engines needs (more or less) and modulate the coke opening to suit--if all is well.
Learn to listen to your engine--it will tell you how to modulate the choke --and besides lighten up on that accelerator until you get some heat in the engine.
What did we say that "heat riser" valve and thermostat was good for??
The accelerator pump will let you start a cold engine without a choke if it works well but you sure won't like the "drivability"
Did anybody ever hear the term they used in the old days of a vehicle being "cold collared" or "cold natured".it meant you had to work a little harder to keep it running until warmup was well underway.
