Are they GMC or Chevy?
I'm not sure exactly what year the Dana 44 was available, but it was an option that came with Positraction.
The center section of a Dana has a cover on the back only...the other style of rear end has a drop-out front center section, and a cover in the rear. It's more round, too.
If you have the choice, go with the Dana--it was used in everything from Studebakers to Mail jeeps to recent Jeep wagoneers, Ford trucks. and a ton of other vehicles. They're about the cheapest rear end to build, parts are readily available for them, they're strong, and you can get a good Posi unit and most any gear ratio you'd want.
