Have you looked at the points to see what condition they are in (burnt out of adjustment)?
It also sounds like you may have some carb issues too(accelerator pump). With the engine off, can you see fuel squirt inside the carb throat?
Check the points, set them and THEN check/adjust the timing as needed.
