I've got the differential cover off of my '54. My dad and I pulled it to check the status of the gears and oil. The oil was noticeably thicker at the bottom of the pumpkin and very black. But to my untrained eyes the gears looked to be in good shape--no obvious scratches, missing teeth, etc. There didn't seem to be much if any grit in the old oil.
So my question is this: while I have the cover off, is there anything I should inspect or adjust while I'm there? There is something in the shop manual about the checking the wear patterns on the ring gear, but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be looking for. Thanks in advance!
