My dad and I pulled it to check the status of the gears and oil. The oil was noticeably thicker at the bottom of the pumpkin and very black. But to my untrained eyes the gears looked to be in good shape--no obvious scratches, missing teeth, etc. There didn't seem to be much if any grit in the old oil.
So my question is this: while I have the cover off, is there anything I should inspect or adjust while I'm there? There is something in the shop manual about the checking the wear patterns on the ring gear, but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be looking for. Thanks in advance! | | |

There should be none. Check the carrier for side to side movement. There should be none there either. If there is a small amount of play in the carrier you can adjust the bearings by removing the locks on both sides & screw the adjusters in an equeal amount on both sides til they snug up & the play is gone. Replace the locks.
