Without analyzing the problem, my opinion would be to replace the mechanical pump and get rid of the electric unit. I can't imagine how a mechanical fuel pump could function sporadically unless there was something floating around in the tank blocking the suction. Maybe the existing dual pump setup worked through this blockage. Sheesh, looks like I tried to analyze it...I can't help myself!
