The most popular "327" factory high performance cam was the Duntov "098" (the last 3 digits of the part number). It was a fairly radical-grind solid lifter cam with a pronounced idle lope. It was fast, and fairly streetable, but it required constant attention to the valve lash because the reccomended clearance was .030" on both intake and exhaust. It was a VERY noisy cam! To get a little bit of idle lope and still have a pretty well-mannered engine on the street, I like to use a Comp Cams 268H High Energy hydraulic cam. It will idle pretty smoothly at around 1200 RPM, and still have steady enough manifold vacuum to use a power brake booster. If you've got to go to 1500 RPM or faster to get the idle to smooth out and the timing to get steady, you're probably still over-cammed a little.
