So I should try to set the initial (mechanical?) timing WITHOUT the vacuum advance to 36-37 deg, then plug the vacuum advance up, which will do its job automatically?

Like I said, its a 283 bored to 302ish (.125 over from what I can figure). This is the story on the motor:

The PO got it from a guy cheap because he couldn't get it to run right. The PO took it to a machine shop and was informed that it was camed WAY to much for the 283. So they put a cam from a 327 vette motor (machine shop said it was good all-around cam) and set the heads to it. It is paired to the origional(?) 3 speed on the column.

I will not be doing any racing with it, just cruising. Guess I'm going to have alot of work just to have that lope lol...
