I bought my sending unit from Lisa (Jim Carter). I put a Z bend in the unit with a pair of needle nose pliers, just enough to clear the side of the tank. Works like a charm.
Anton, I had the same issue with my tank. My truck came from Barstow, CA and the tank was in perfect shape, but hadn't seen gas for 30 years. I took it to my local rad and tank guy who is amazing. He just boiled it, resealed around the line, checked for leaks and returned it to me good as new. He said he wasn't even going to line it because it was in such good shape. For me, it was a piece of mind.
The filling station is a nice shop to deal with. I purchased my rear tail lights from them.
