The differences in the top edge of the 47-53 vs 54/55 pickup box is show in this illustration. The side-mount spare tire carrier was introduced in 1953. That unit will work on 47-53 beds. You'd need to convert the driver's side fender
(with a "dimple") for the tire to fit on a 1/2 ton Chevrolet pickup. On a 3/4 & 1-ton ton Chevrolet pickup truck, there is no need for a dimple in the fender.
