Gaskets exist for the joint between inlet and exhaust manifolds and for the joint between the manifolds and the head. My thought is that even when our trucks were made they'd thought of "value engineering" and if the part didn't serve a purpose, they wouldn't have bothered putting it there. (A purpose other than raising the price, specially if it's hidden so we can't see where the money goes.)
