the resistor normally does get really hot - yes it could be smoking the spiderwebs away, and if it's a new resistor it's the lettering paint getting "cured" - probably indicates the points are closed and the coil is drawing it's full shot - you could disconnect the wire from the coil to the dist and see if it stops the heating
