There are two small-diameter terminals on a Delco starter solenoid. The one marked "S" gets the voltage from the push button, and the "R" terminal goes to the downstream side of the resistor or the + terminal of the coil.(Different ends of the same wire) The only time the "S" terminal of the solenoid gets battery voltage is during cranking, when the solenoid is pulled in and supplying current to the starter motor.
