Okey Dokey, I tink I got some of it figured out.
This is the standard 4lb cap that any of the vendors carry:

I’d sure like to do an autopsy on one of those tanks to see the insides. I’m sure many were simply thrown away when they rusted out even today. Fabricating one to look like an original would be a simple matter if you had the dimensions and knew what the inside looked like. I suspect that there may be a stand pipe of some sorts in there because of the two pipes. I don’t know why they would need an inlet and an outlet because there is no circulation involved. All that would be needed is to blow it in and suck it out.
