How is working under the truck going to make much difference when the front end is off? I would think removing the front end is still a lot more work than unbolting the tranny from the engine.
If you are working on the engine, pull the engine. If you are working on the tranny, Pull the tranny. You'll save time over removing both and/or the front end.
