My suggestion for first start is that it would be better to have the external oil filter completely out of the picture by plugging the supply line. The oil that flows into it is lost for the moment as far as lubricating anything. It merely tumbles back into the oil pan sump.
For an old loose engine, the oil pressure available to lube the engine may be severely depleted since the filter provides a parallel path back to the oil pan that does nothing other than perhaps a little cleaning.
